Foreign Minister of Syria Walid Muallem and his South Ossetian counterpart Dmitry Medoev signed in Damascus agreement on the establishment of diplomatic relations between States.

The Syrian national news Agency SANA reports that during the meeting the Ministers discussed the development of bilateral relations in a number of areas. Muallem told about the signing of several bilateral agreements in the interests of both countries.

the Minister for foreign Affairs of South Ossetia expressed gratitude on behalf of the leadership of the Republic for the position of Damascus in connection with the recognition of the country, noting the desire of Tskhinvali to develop relations in the fields of economy, politics and culture. Respect for the independence

at the end of may, the Syrian Arab Republic recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Tskhinvali, for its part, promised to consider the matter about opening its Embassy in Damascus.

The US has recognized illegal the decision of the Syrian authorities and told that South Ossetia together with Abkhazia remain part of Georgia. Then Tbilisi start the process of severing diplomatic relations with Syria.
