Benzene leak reaches Amursk On January 2, the toxic leak, floating down the Amur river, has reached Amursk town in Khabarovsk region.

According to operating officer of Russian Far East regional Emergency Minister centre, nitrobenzene content in the river in the area of the town?s water intake is below maximum allowable concentration.

In this connection, water supply in Amursk town with population over 50 thousand people is not cut off. At the town?s water supply points the water from the river is treated with activated carbon.

The toxic leak is expected to approach Komsomolsk-on-Amur.

Toxic substance get into the Amur river as a result of Chemical plant accident in China on November 13, 2005. About 100 tons of toxic substances get into the Songhua river, the Amur tributary. The spread of contamination zone constitutes about 190 km.
